To truly understand a wedding DJ’s fees, it’s crucial to deconstruct the costs involved.

Wedding DJ Experience

Foremost, the DJ’s experience in playing Weddings is a pivotal factor. A seasoned wedding DJ commands higher rates due to their specialist expertise and established reputation, often built up over decades.

DJing at weddings is different from just about every other type of function. It requires the ability to be flexible; able to adapt to changing situations, and varying tastes, ages and moods, at a moment’s notice. An experienced wedding DJ knows what works, and what doesn’t.

Unlike Clubs DJs, Wedding DJs often need to cater to audiences with huge age ranges, and different tastes in music, ensuring that whilst the Bride & Groom are happy, littles ones and great-grand parents are too! (‘Clean’ edits of current songs are a must!). Once again, this is where experience comes to the fore.

An experienced wedding DJ will also be familiar with the needs of other vendors and the venue and work to make sure they work with them to create a seamless experience. For example, understanding that photographers don’t like the use of laser lights because they can mess up their pictures and so ensuring they are turned off or diverted whilst the photographer is working.

Equipment Costs

A laptop, capable of managing the huge music libraries of songs required of a wedding DJ, whilst also connecting to controllers for both the music playback and light shows, can typically cost around £2,500 alone. Speakers can cost over £1000 each. Controllers up to around £2500, and so on. We haven’t even started talking about lights, lighting controllers, mixers, software…

PAT Testing

As well as the cost of expensive equipment, we also need to factor in the cost of regular equipment testing. Many venues will refuse to allow DJs to plug their equipment in, unless they can prove their equipment is regularly PAT tested. This is required every year, with every piece of electrical equipment, not to mention every cable, required to be tested and certified as safe.

Wedding DJ Set Preparation

Additionally, the time spent preparing for your wedding—such as crafting personalised playlists, visiting new venues and coordinating with other vendors—is reflected in the fee. Depending on your requirements, DJs can spend many hours crafting a set, downloading tunes for special requests and making edits to make sure they are suitable for all audiences.

Travel to Your Wedding Venue

Travel expenses may also be factored in, particularly if the DJ needs to journey a substantial distance to your wedding venue. Often, particularly if the DJ has not played that venue before, DJs will visit venues before your big day, to ensure the equipment they bring is suitable for the venue and will give you the best possible results.

Then of course, we need to add vehicle costs, as well as tax, insurance, maintenance & parking.
